What ABS Does (And Why It Matters)
Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) prevent wheel lockup during emergency braking by rapidly pulsing brake pressure at each wheel independently. Without ABS, hard braking on slippery surfaces locks the wheels — you lose steering control and slide instead of stopping. ABS allows you to steer while braking at maximum force, significantly reducing stopping distances on wet, icy, or gravel surfaces.
When the ABS light illuminates, the ABS system has been disabled by the control module due to a detected fault. Your regular brakes still function normally — but you’ve lost the ABS function. On dry pavement in normal driving, you likely won’t notice a difference. On wet roads or in an emergency stop, the loss of ABS could affect vehicle control.
Common Causes of the ABS Light
- Wheel speed sensor failure — The most common cause. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors rotation speed; a failed, damaged, or dirty sensor triggers an ABS fault. Sensors can fail from corrosion, physical damage, or wiring issues.

- Wiring issues — Corroded connectors or damaged wiring to ABS sensors or module
Should You Keep Driving?
If only the ABS light is on (no brake warning light, no pedal changes): you can drive carefully to get it diagnosed and repaired, but be aware that ABS is not functioning. Avoid situations requiring emergency braking on wet or icy surfaces if possible.
