Your alternator is the electrical generator that keeps your battery charged and powers every electrical system in your vehicle while the engine runs — from headlights and the radio to the ignition system and power windows. When the alternator fails, you’re running on battery power alone, and when that runs out, the vehicle stops. The Charging System: How It Works Together
Three components work together in the charging system:
- Alternator — Generates AC power from mechanical rotation (driven by the serpentine belt); an internal voltage regulator converts it to DC and controls output voltage, typically 13.5–14.5V
- Battery — Stores energy for starting and provides power during brief high-demand moments; also stabilizes voltage fluctuations in the system
- Charging system wiring and fusible links — Carries current from the alternator to the battery and throughout the vehicle’s electrical system
Alternator failure diagnosis requires testing all three components — a failed battery can mask a good alternator, and vice versa. We load-test the battery and measure alternator output under load to identify exactly which component needs replacement.
Warning Signs of Alternator Failure
- Battery warning light (or ALT light) — The most direct indicator; illuminates when charging voltage falls outside normal range
- Dimming headlights — Especially at idle or when multiple accessories are running
- Electrical accessories behaving erratically — Radio cutting out, power windows slow, dashboard lights flickering
- Dead battery repeatedly — If the battery keeps going dead despite being relatively new, the alternator may not be charging it
- Whining or grinding from engine — Worn alternator bearings produce noise under the hood
- Car starts but dies shortly after — The vehicle runs until battery depletes; then engine management loses power

- Serpentine belt condition — the belt drives the alternator; a worn belt causes slippage and undercharging

- Charging system wiring, fusible links, and ground connections — high-resistance connections cause undercharging symptoms even with a good alternator
