Cooling System Failures

BMW cooling system failures are arguably the most common category of serious BMW repair. The N52, N54, N55, and N20 engines all use electric water pumps and plastic thermostat housings that are prone to failure, often without much warning. Signs of cooling system problems include the temperature gauge climbing higher than normal, coolant warning lights, or visible coolant loss. Worn VANOS solenoids or actuators cause symptoms including rough idle (especially cold), reduced power and fuel economy, and check engine lights with codes related to camshaft timing. VANOS diagnosis requires BMW-specific scan tools to read the relevant adaptations — a standard OBD-II reader won’t give you the full picture.

High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failures

The N54 and early N55 engines have a known weakness: the high-pressure fuel pump. Symptoms include hard starting, rough running, and power loss under acceleration. Common BMW Electrical Problems
