When it’s time for new brake pads, you’ll hear terms like “ceramic,” “semi-metallic,” and “organic” thrown around — and the price differences can be significant. Which type is best for your vehicle and driving style? The honest answer: it depends, and there are real trade-offs for each. Here’s how Norm’s Auto Clinic in Coweta approaches the brake pad selection decision.

Organic/NAO Pads — The Entry Level

Organic pads (also called non-asbestos organic or NAO) are made from a blend of fibers (glass, rubber, resin) without significant metal content. They’re softer, quieter, and gentler on rotors than other types. However, they wear faster (20,000–30,000 mile lifespan), produce more dust, and perform poorly under heat. These are the cheapest option but the most expensive per mile of service life. Not recommended for trucks, towing applications, or performance use.
Semi-Metallic Pads — The OEM Standard
Semi-metallic pads contain 30–65% metal (steel fibers, iron powder, copper) bound in resin. Most factory OEM brake pads are semi-metallic. Advantages: excellent heat tolerance (important for Oklahoma summer driving and towing), good stopping power across a wide temperature range, and moderate pad life (30,000–50,000 miles). Disadvantages: slightly noisier than ceramic, more brake dust, slightly harder on rotor surfaces.

Ceramic Pads — The Premium Daily Driver Choice
Ceramic pads use ceramic compounds and copper fibers (being phased out) embedded in resin. Advantages: quietest brake pad type, cleanest (light-colored dust that doesn’t darken wheels), longest life (50,000–70,000 miles), gentle on rotors. Disadvantages: more expensive upfront, may not perform as well at extreme temperatures (track use, heavy towing in mountains), and can be slower to warm up to full friction in very cold conditions (rare in Oklahoma).
What Norm’s Recommends for Oklahoma Drivers

For daily drivers: Ceramic pads — the longest life and cleanest operation justify the modest price premium. For trucks and towing vehicles: Quality semi-metallic pads — heat tolerance is more critical than quiet operation for vehicles regularly under load. Budget/economy brake jobs: We don’t use bargain-bin organic pads; we use quality semi-metallic pads as our minimum standard.
