The Chevrolet Equinox is one of the most popular compact crossovers in Oklahoma — affordable, fuel-efficient, and practical for families. However, certain Equinox model years have significant known issues that owners should be aware of before buying or servicing one. At Norm’s Auto Clinic in Coweta, we’ve diagnosed and repaired many Equinoxes — here’s what you need to know.

The 1.5T and 2.0T Oil Consumption Problem (2018–2021)

The 2018–2021 Equinox with the turbocharged 1.5L and 2.0L 4-cylinder engines has a well-documented excessive oil consumption issue. Some affected vehicles consume 1 quart of oil every 1,000–2,000 miles — far above acceptable levels. The cause is piston ring sealing, and GM has issued updates but not always a full resolution.
If you own one of these Equinoxes, check your oil level every 1,000 miles between changes — don’t rely on the oil life monitor alone. Document your consumption. GM extended the warranty on affected vehicles in response to class-action lawsuits; check if your VIN qualifies for coverage. If you’re buying a used Equinox from this era, do a compression test and check oil consumption history first.
Equinox Timing Chain Issues (2.4L 4-Cylinder, 2010–2017)
The older 2.4L Ecotec 4-cylinder in 2010–2017 Equinoxes has a timing chain tensioner and guide design that fails prematurely with neglected oil changes. A rattling sound on cold start is the warning sign. Timing chain replacement is a significant job on this engine — –,400. Preventing it is simple: 5W-30 full synthetic, changed every 5,000–7,500 miles.

Other Common Equinox Problems
- Water pump failure: The internal water pump on the 2.4L Ecotec is driven by the timing chain — it leaks into the engine oil when the seal fails, causing a catastrophic mix of oil and coolant. If the oil looks milky or coolant is disappearing without external leaks, suspect the internal water pump. This requires a complete engine teardown to repair properly.
- Sunroof drain clog: Oklahoma’s dust and cottonwood debris clog the panoramic sunroof drains on Equinoxes, causing water to run into the interior. Annual drain tube flushing prevents interior water damage.
- AC compressor failure: The Equinox AC compressor fails at relatively low mileage (60,000–80,000 miles) in Oklahoma’s heat. A grinding sound when the AC compressor engages or warm air from the vents are the symptoms.
- Transmission shudder (6-speed automatic): The 6T40 and 6T45 transmissions in Equinoxes can shudder at light throttle. A transmission fluid drain-and-fill is the first step; verify the correct Dexron VI fluid is used.
