The Ram 1500 has been offered with several engine choices over the years, each with specific maintenance requirements:

3.7L V6 (2009–2012) and 3.6L Pentastar V6 (2013+)

The Pentastar is reliable with standard maintenance. Use full synthetic 5W-20 and change every 6,000–8,000 miles. The 3.7L V6 in earlier models is more conventional; 5,000-mile oil changes keep it in good shape. Watch for the plastic thermostat housing on 2011–2013 Pentastars — a known weak point that can leak at the water pump connection.

4.7L V8 (2002–2012)

A capable engine but known for sludging if oil changes are deferred. Stick to 4,000–5,000 mile intervals. The water pump and radiator are prone to leaking on higher-mileage examples. Head gasket issues can develop but are less common than some other engines of the era if oil is maintained.

5.7L HEMI V8 (2003+)

The HEMI is excellent — one of the best truck engines ever produced for durability and longevity. Reaches 200,000+ miles reliably with proper care. Key maintenance item: the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) requires timely oil changes. MDS lifter failures are the main HEMI concern and are directly related to deferred oil changes. Use full synthetic 5W-20 and change every 5,000 miles.

3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (2014+)

The EcoDiesel offers excellent fuel economy and torque but requires diesel-specific maintenance. Use the correct diesel engine oil spec (CK-4 or as specified), change the fuel filter every 30,000 miles, and monitor the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) system. Emission system repairs (EGR, DPF) can be costly if maintenance is deferred on diesel models.

Truck engine maintenance and oil change

Ram 1500 Maintenance Schedule

Every 5,000–7,500 Miles

  • Engine oil and filter change (full synthetic recommended)
  • Tire rotation — Ram trucks wear tires unevenly if not rotated regularly; every 5,000–6,000 miles keeps wear even
  • Fluid level check: coolant, brake, power steering, washer

Every 15,000–30,000 Miles

  • Air filter replacement — particularly important in Oklahoma’s dust and pollen environment
  • Cabin air filter replacement
  • Brake inspection — Ram 1500s used for towing need more frequent brake checks
  • Suspension inspection: ball joints, tie rod ends, track bar on 4WD models
  • Inspect 4WD components: hubs, front differential, transfer case for leaks

Every 30,000–60,000 Miles

  • Transmission fluid service (automatic 8-speed ZF or older 5-speed/6-speed)
  • Transfer case fluid — every 30,000 miles on 4WD models
  • Front and rear differential fluid — more frequent if towing regularly
  • Coolant flush — every 30,000 miles in Oklahoma heat
  • Brake fluid replacement — every 2 years
  • Spark plug replacement (HEMI iridium plugs at 60,000 miles)

Every 60,000–100,000 Miles

  • Serpentine belt inspection and replacement
  • Full suspension inspection — shocks/struts, control arm bushings, sway bar links
  • Oxygen sensor replacement on higher-mileage vehicles
  • Fuel filter (especially important on diesel models)

Common Ram 1500 Problems

  • HEMI tick: A ticking noise from the HEMI engine at idle, often caused by collapsed MDS lifters. Prevention: timely oil changes. Fix: lifter replacement — budget $800–$2,000 depending on severity.
  • Transmission shudder (8-speed): The ZF 8-speed can shudder during low-speed torque converter operation. Often addressed by a transmission fluid change with the correct fluid specification and a software update.
  • Steering wander: Ram 1500s (particularly 2009–2018 models) are known for front-end wander and loose steering feel. Tie rod, track bar, and alignment correction address most cases.
  • Rear differential seal leaks: Common on Ram trucks with higher mileage; differential gear oil seeping from the pinion or axle seals. Catch early to prevent bearing damage.
  • Uconnect infotainment issues: Touchscreen freezing, Bluetooth dropouts, and module failures are common in 2013–2018 Ram trucks. Software updates resolve many issues; module replacement is sometimes needed.
