Ford 6.7 Powerstroke Maintenance Schedule — Norm's Auto Clinic Coweta OK

Ford 6.7 Powerstroke Maintenance Schedule

The Ford 6.7L PowerStroke diesel is the engine in F-250, F-350, and F-450 Super Duty trucks from 2011 onward — and it’s Ford’s most capable and reliable diesel engine to date. However, keeping a 6.7L PowerStroke running its best requires understanding its specific maintenance requirements, particularly the fuel system and emissions components. At Norm’s Auto Clinic in Coweta, we service PowerStroke diesels for working truck owners throughout Eastern Oklahoma.

6.7L PowerStroke Oil Requirements

The 6.7L PowerStroke requires diesel-rated engine oil — specifically:

  • Spec: API CK-4 or FA-4 rated diesel oil. Ford recommends Motorcraft 10W-30 Diesel Motor Oil for most operating temperatures. Use 5W-40 in extreme cold (below -10°F, rarely a concern in Oklahoma).
  • Capacity: The 6.7L has a large 13-quart oil capacity — more oil means more thermal stability but also higher cost per change.
  • Interval: Ford recommends 7,500–10,000 miles, but for heavy towing and hauling use in Oklahoma heat, we recommend 5,000–7,500 miles. Never go beyond 10,000 miles under any circumstances with a turbocharged diesel.

Fuel Filter Service — The Most Critical 6.7L Maintenance

The 6.7L PowerStroke uses a two-filter fuel system — a primary filter under the hood (the fuel/water separator) and a secondary filter. Both must be serviced regularly:

  • Primary fuel/water separator: Check the water-in-fuel indicator at every oil change. Drain water if indicated; replace the filter every 15,000 miles.
  • Secondary fuel filter: Replace every 15,000 miles alongside the primary.
  • Consequence of neglect: A clogged or failed fuel filter starves the CP4 high-pressure injection pump — a ,500–,500 repair. Fuel filter replacement is – in parts. The math is clear.

DEF System Maintenance

The 6.7L uses SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) with DEF injection to meet emissions standards. DEF management is important for reliable operation:

  • Keep the DEF tank above 1/4 full — running it dry triggers a derate warning, and driving to empty will eventually limit speed to 5 mph
  • Use quality DEF — cheap or old DEF can crystallize in the injector nozzle and DEF lines
  • Oklahoma summer heat accelerates DEF degradation in storage containers — buy fresh, use within a season
  • DEF consumption is approximately 1/50th of diesel consumption — roughly 2 gallons for every 100 gallons of diesel

EGR and DPF Issues on 6.7L PowerStroke

  • EGR cooler failure: The 6.7L is less prone to EGR cooler failure than older PowerStroke engines, but carbon buildup in the EGR system can still affect performance over time. Cleaning at 100,000-mile intervals is preventive maintenance.
  • DPF regeneration: The DPF burns collected soot during highway driving. Short-trip driving prevents successful regen cycles. If the DPF gets excessively loaded, a forced regen (done in-shop) or DPF cleaning service is needed.
  • SCR catalyst: The SCR catalyst converts NOx with DEF injection. It can fail if contaminated with improper fluids or from excessive DEF crystallization.
