Ford’s Super Duty lineup — the F-250 and F-350 — represents the heavy end of the truck spectrum. These are work trucks, towing machines, and farm vehicles that see some of the hardest use of any vehicle on Oklahoma roads. The Super Duty’s maintenance requirements are distinct from the lighter F-150, and the consequences of neglected service on a truck working this hard are severe. At Norm’s Auto Clinic in Coweta, we’re experienced with all Super Duty configurations, including the 6.7L PowerStroke diesel.

Super Duty Engine Options and Service Requirements

- 6.2L Gas V8: Ford’s workhorse gas option. Uses 5W-20 or 5W-30 synthetic. Oil change every 7,500 miles under normal conditions; 5,000–6,000 miles if towing heavy frequently. Simple, reliable, no turbocharger to worry about.
- 7.3L Gas V8 (2020+): Ford’s new “Godzilla” engine. A pushrod V8 designed for heavy work. Excellent torque and durability expectations; same oil change discipline as the 6.2L.
- 6.7L PowerStroke Diesel: The dominant Super Duty engine. Diesel-specific oil (CJ-4 rated, 10W-30 or 15W-40 depending on conditions). Oil changes every 7,500–10,000 miles. Diesel fuel filter replacement every 10,000–15,000 miles is critical — a clogged fuel filter starves the high-pressure fuel pump.
Super Duty Maintenance Schedule
Heavy-duty trucks demand more frequent inspection than their lighter counterparts. If you use your Super Duty for towing, hauling, or farm work, treat it as “severe service” — use the shorter intervals below:
- Every 5,000–7,500 miles (gas) / 7,500–10,000 miles (diesel): Oil and filter change; check all fluid levels
- Every 10,000–15,000 miles: Diesel fuel filter (primary and secondary); tire rotation; brake inspection
- Every 30,000 miles: Transmission fluid (6R140 automatic); rear differential; transfer case (4WD); front differential; diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system check
- Every 45,000–60,000 miles: Coolant flush; spark plugs (gas engines); air filter; complete drivetrain inspection
- Every 100,000 miles: Full suspension inspection (ball joints, tie rods, steering components); EGR system cleaning (diesel); DPF inspection (diesel)

6.7L PowerStroke Diesel — Specific Maintenance Items
The PowerStroke diesel has a complex emissions system that requires attention beyond standard maintenance:
- Diesel Fuel Filter (primary and secondary): The most important diesel-specific service item. A clogged fuel filter causes poor performance, hard starting, and can destroy the high-pressure fuel injection pump — a ,000–,000 repair. Change both filters every 10,000–15,000 miles.
- Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF): The DEF tank must be kept filled to avoid emissions-related performance limitations or derate (reduced engine power). Use fresh DEF — it degrades over time, especially in Oklahoma’s summer heat. Don’t let it crystallize in the tank.
- DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regeneration: The DPF captures soot and periodically burns it off during a regen cycle. Avoid too many short trips that prevent regen from completing. If the DPF warning light appears, complete a forced regen or bring the truck in for service.
- EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system: Carbon buildup in the EGR cooler and valve is common on PowerStroke diesels. Cleaning at 100,000-mile intervals prevents reduced power and potential overheating.
- Coolant filter (if equipped): Some Super Duties have an optional coolant filter. Change every 30,000 miles if present.
Super Duty Brake Service
A truck that regularly tows 15,000–25,000 lbs puts enormous stress on the brake system. Super Duty brakes are significantly larger than F-150 brakes, but they still wear from heavy towing. Inspect brake pads and rotors every 25,000 miles if towing frequently. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time — replace every 2 years regardless of mileage.
