Hyundai Palisade, Ioniq & Kona: Maintenance Tips for Oklahoma Owners

Hyundai’s newer lineup — the large Palisade SUV, the Ioniq hybrid and electric family, and the compact Kona crossover — represents a significant leap forward for the brand. These vehicles are better built, better featured, and more technologically advanced than any previous Hyundai. They also come with some unique maintenance considerations that differ from older Hyundai models.

Whether you’re driving a Palisade through Coweta’s back roads, commuting in a Kona, or charging your Ioniq 5 at home, this guide covers the specific maintenance needs, common issues, and service intervals that will keep your newer Hyundai running reliably for years.

Hyundai Palisade Maintenance Essentials

The Palisade is a full-size three-row SUV powered by Hyundai’s 3.8L V6 — one of the more reliable engines in Hyundai’s modern lineup. Oil changes every 5,000–7,500 miles with full synthetic are the foundation of Palisade maintenance. Unlike the older Theta II engines, the Lambda II V6 doesn’t have the same failure risk, but it still benefits from consistent, timely oil changes.

The Palisade’s HTRAC AWD system (if equipped) needs periodic fluid service at the rear differential and transfer case — every 30,000 miles or when driving in severe conditions. The 8-speed transmission is smooth and durable, but a fluid change at 60,000–80,000 miles is a worthwhile preventive measure.

One area of concern on higher-mileage Palisades: the sunroof drain tubes can clog and cause water intrusion into the interior. During annual service, we inspect and clear these drains — it takes five minutes and prevents expensive interior water damage that insurance often won’t cover.

Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Electric Maintenance

The Ioniq Hybrid requires less frequent engine maintenance than a conventional vehicle — the combustion engine works less hard and the regenerative braking system significantly reduces brake wear. For the hybrid, plan for oil changes every 7,500–10,000 miles with synthetic oil, though we still recommend staying toward the lower end of that range in Oklahoma’s heat.

The Ioniq Electric requires almost no traditional mechanical maintenance — no oil changes, no spark plugs, no timing belt. However, the 12V auxiliary battery (separate from the main drive battery) still needs attention and typically requires replacement every 3–5 years. The cabin air filter, brake fluid, and tire rotation are the primary regular maintenance items.

For any Ioniq with the high-voltage battery, avoid exposing the vehicle to extreme heat for extended periods without climate control. Oklahoma summers are particularly hard on lithium battery chemistry — parking in the shade or a garage and preconditionig the battery via the app before driving can meaningfully extend battery lifespan.

Hyundai Kona: Small SUV, Big Personality, Real Maintenance Needs

The Kona is available with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine or a 1.6T turbocharged engine. The turbo Kona is fun to drive but requires stricter oil change adherence — we recommend every 5,000 miles with full synthetic, not the extended intervals Hyundai sometimes suggests. Turbocharger failures from oil starvation or degraded oil are a real risk on any turbocharged small crossover.

Kona brakes tend to wear faster than average for a small crossover, likely due to the vehicle’s stiff suspension tuning. Inspecting brakes annually — or at every other oil change — is a good habit. The electric parking brake on the Kona also requires periodic actuator calibration, which we handle during brake service.

One quirk of the Kona: some owners report a creaking or groaning sound from the front suspension at low speeds. This is typically caused by the front strut upper mount or front control arm bushings. It’s not dangerous at first but should be addressed before it develops into a more significant handling issue.
