Infiniti QX60 & Q50 Common Problems: What Oklahoma Owners Experience

Infiniti’s QX60 three-row family SUV and Q50 sport sedan are popular choices in northeastern Oklahoma for buyers who want a step above mainstream vehicles without full European luxury pricing. Both are built on Nissan platforms and share some of Nissan’s strengths — and some of its known weaknesses.

At Norm’s Auto Clinic, we service Infiniti vehicles and apply the same specialized knowledge that keeps Nissans running reliably. Here’s what QX60 and Q50 owners experience most often.

Infiniti QX60: CVT Reliability and Nissan Shared DNA

The Infiniti QX60 uses a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) shared with Nissan Pathfinder and Murano models. Infiniti’s version is better calibrated and generally more reliable than in base Nissan applications, but it shares the fundamental CVT vulnerability: fluid maintenance. CVT fluid changes every 30,000–40,000 miles with Infiniti/Nissan NS-3 or NS-2 fluid are essential. Many QX60 owners skip this service because Infiniti markets the CVT as maintenance-free — this is the leading cause of expensive CVT failures we see at 100,000–150,000 miles.

The QX60’s 3.5L VQ35DE V6 is the same fundamentally sound engine found in numerous Nissan and Infiniti models. It benefits from 5,000-mile oil changes with full synthetic and timing chain tensioner inspection at 100,000+ miles — the tensioner can develop play that causes startup rattle and eventual chain wear.

Second-generation QX60 models (2022+) moved to a 9-speed automatic transmission, eliminating the CVT concern. These are substantially more reliable in the drivetrain and represent a significant improvement in ownership experience.

Infiniti Q50: Twin-Turbo V6 and Electrical Complexity

The Q50 with the 3.0T twin-turbo V6 (2016+) is a powerful, sophisticated engine that rewards precise maintenance with genuine reliability. Oil changes every 5,000 miles with 0W-40 full synthetic meeting Nissan/Infiniti specification are non-negotiable for turbocharged engine longevity. The twin turbos rely on clean oil for bearing lubrication — degraded oil causes turbocharger bearing wear that’s expensive to repair.

The Q50’s Direct Adaptive Steering — the steer-by-wire system on Performance models — is a sophisticated system that occasionally requires software updates. Some owners found early versions unsettling; the system has improved substantially with calibration updates. If your Q50 has an unusual steering feel, check whether all available calibration updates have been applied.
