Lexus GX, LX & IS Common Problems: High-Mileage Ownership in Oklahoma

The Lexus GX and LX are among the most capable luxury SUVs ever made — truck-based, off-road competent, and almost indestructible when properly maintained. Many Oklahoma owners run GX 470 and GX 460 models well past 200,000 miles with confidence. The Lexus IS sports sedan offers an entirely different character — driving engagement with Toyota reliability underpinning.

Even these vehicles have maintenance needs and weak spots. Here’s what Norm’s Auto Clinic has learned from years of servicing Lexus GX, LX, and IS models for Oklahoma drivers.

Lexus GX: Rust, Differential Seals, and the V8 Advantage

The Lexus GX 470 (2003–2009) and GX 460 (2010+) share Toyota’s Land Cruiser underpinnings — arguably the most durable truck platform ever engineered. The 4.7L V8 (GX 470) and 4.6L V8 (GX 460) are robust engines that respond well to regular oil changes and can reach 300,000+ miles.

The most common issue on high-mileage GX 470s is differential front pinion seal leakage and differential fluid degradation. Oklahoma’s rough roads and occasional off-road use accelerate seal wear. At 150,000+ miles, inspect the front and rear differential seals at each service visit. Replacing a leaking seal (–) is far cheaper than a differential rebuild (,500–,500).

The GX 460’s water pump and timing belt (on earlier models) are important service items — the V8 uses a belt-driven system that requires replacement at 90,000 miles. Missing this service can result in catastrophic belt failure and engine damage. We’ve seen GX 460s come in with 110,000 miles and an original timing belt — this is a ticking clock.

Lexus LX: Land Cruiser Reliability, Premium Complexity

The Lexus LX (based on the Land Cruiser) adds premium technology on top of the LX 570’s legendary off-road capability. The TEMS (Electronically Modulated Suspension) and air suspension available on LX models are comfort-enhancing but add complexity that needs periodic attention.

LX 570 air suspension bags and struts typically develop leaks or reduced ride height around 100,000–150,000 miles. This is a more complex system than the RX air suspension and can cost ,000–,500 to repair at a dealership — significantly less at our shop for equivalent quality work. Catching small air leaks early prevents compressor burnout, which is the most expensive component in the system.

The LX 570’s 5.7L V8 is bulletproof by reputation, but its eight-speed transmission (2013+) benefits from fluid service at 60,000 miles. The transfer case and front/rear differentials all need periodic service — we recommend a full drivetrain service every 40,000 miles for LX models used in Oklahoma’s varied terrain.

Lexus IS: Sports Sedan Maintenance and Known Issues

The Lexus IS 250 and IS 350 are performance-oriented sedans that reward proper maintenance with genuine longevity. The IS 250’s 2.5L V6 has a known rough cold-start issue (particularly in winter) that’s typically caused by VVT-i system deposits. A quality engine flush and fresh oil at the start of winter resolves this for most owners.

IS 350 models with the 3.5L V6 are faster and more powerful but share the same basic maintenance needs. The 8-speed automatic transmission in later IS models is excellent but responds well to fluid service at 60,000 miles — this prevents the hesitation and shudder that can develop in high-mileage Lexus automatics.

IS models with active suspension (the optional air suspension or Lexus’s Adaptive Variable Suspension AVS) develop firmness or bounce characteristics over time. AVS shocks typically need replacement around 100,000–120,000 miles. Genuine Lexus AVS shocks are available from our wholesale network at prices significantly below dealership list.
