Oklahoma Summer Road Trip Car Prep: Complete Checklist

A summer road trip from Oklahoma — whether you’re heading to Colorado, Texas, the Gulf Coast, or simply doing a long day trip to Tulsa and back — puts real demands on your vehicle. Add Oklahoma’s summer heat and the distances involved, and any developing mechanical issue that might be minor around town can become a full breakdown on a remote stretch of I-40 in 105-degree heat.

Norm’s Auto Clinic recommends this pre-road trip vehicle inspection checklist for Oklahoma summer travel.

Road Trip Vehicle Checklist

  • Oil: Check level and condition; if you’re within 1,000 miles of your next change, do it before the trip
  • Tires: Check pressure on all four tires AND the spare; inspect for tread depth and any sidewall damage
  • Coolant: Check level and condition; verify the reservoir is between MIN and MAX marks
  • AC: Confirm the AC is blowing cold and maintaining temperature; a weak AC in 105-degree heat becomes a health hazard
  • Brakes: If you haven’t had brakes inspected in the past year, have them checked before any long trip
  • Battery: Have the battery load-tested if it’s more than 2 years old
  • Belts and hoses: Visually inspect drive belts for cracking; check that radiator hoses are firm, not spongy
  • Lights: Check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard flashers
  • Windshield: Check for chips that could expand into cracks from the temperature swings at altitude (if heading to Colorado)
  • Emergency kit: Jumper cables, water, phone charger, first aid kit, basic tools, and a flashlight

For vehicles with 75,000+ miles, a comprehensive pre-trip inspection is worth the time and cost. We catch things that look fine in the driveway but will fail under sustained highway heat — a stressed alternator, a water pump with a weeping seal, a tire with internal damage from a past impact.

Driving Through Oklahoma Summer Heat: Highway Tips

On multi-hour highway drives in summer heat, monitor your temperature gauge periodically — especially if you’re towing, loaded heavy, or climbing grades. Oklahoma’s I-44 through Tulsa has several sustained grades that push cooling systems hard. If the temperature gauge starts rising above normal, turn off the AC and turn on the heater (it acts as a secondary radiator) and get off the highway as soon as safely possible.

Tire pressure increases on long highway drives — about 4–6 PSI above the cold pressure you checked at home. This is normal and expected; the tires are designed to operate at elevated pressure during driving. Don’t release air from hot tires.
