The P0300 trouble code stands for “Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected.” It’s one of the most unsettling check engine light codes to see — and one of the most important to address quickly. Unlike cylinder-specific misfire codes (P0301, P0302, etc.), P0300 means the engine’s computer is detecting misfires but can’t pin them on a single cylinder consistently. This guide explains exactly what causes P0300, what you’ll feel when it’s happening, and what it costs to fix.

What Is an Engine Misfire?

A misfire occurs when a cylinder fails to fire properly — meaning the air-fuel mixture doesn’t combust when it should, or combustion is incomplete. The engine’s crankshaft position sensor detects the resulting irregular rotation and the ECU logs a misfire event. When misfires are occurring randomly across multiple cylinders (or the pattern doesn’t consistently implicate one), P0300 is set.
A misfire isn’t just a minor hiccup. Unburned fuel enters the exhaust stream, which can quickly damage — or destroy — the catalytic converter. This is why a flashing P0300 (flashing check engine light) requires immediate attention.
Symptoms of a P0300 Misfire
- Rough idle or engine shaking at a stop
- Stumbling or hesitation during acceleration
- Loss of power, especially at highway speeds
- Flashing or solid check engine light
- Increased fuel consumption
- Rotten egg smell from exhaust (catalytic converter being damaged)
- Engine may cut out or stall at low speed
Common Causes of P0300
1. Worn or Fouled Spark Plugs
The most common cause of random misfires. Spark plugs wear over time — the electrode gap widens, the tip erodes, or the plug becomes fouled with carbon or oil. A worn plug can’t reliably ignite the air-fuel mixture, producing inconsistent misfires. Fix cost: – for most 4-cylinder vehicles; up to for V8 engines with difficult access.
2. Failing Ignition Coils
Modern engines use individual coil-on-plug (COP) ignition coils. When a coil weakens, it may fire inconsistently — sometimes properly, sometimes not — producing a random misfire rather than a consistent single-cylinder pattern. Coils often fail intermittently when hot, making the pattern random. Fix cost: – depending on how many coils are replaced.
3. Fuel System Issues
Low fuel pressure (from a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter) or partially clogged fuel injectors can starve cylinders of fuel inconsistently, causing random misfires under load. This is more common on vehicles that have been run very low on fuel repeatedly. Fix cost: – depending on whether it’s a filter, injector cleaning, or pump replacement.

4. Vacuum Leaks
An unmetered air leak into the intake manifold throws off the air-fuel ratio engine-wide, causing lean misfires that may rotate between cylinders. Cracked vacuum lines, a leaking intake manifold gasket, or a faulty brake booster check valve are common leak sources. Fix cost: – depending on location and severity.
5. Low Compression in Multiple Cylinders
Worn piston rings, failed head gaskets, or camshaft timing issues can reduce compression in cylinders, making combustion weak or inconsistent. This is more serious and more expensive to diagnose and repair, but it’s what a compression test (standard in our P0300 diagnostic) will reveal. Fix cost: –,500+ depending on cause (head gasket vs engine wear).
6. EGR Valve Stuck Open
An EGR valve stuck in the open position allows exhaust gas to dilute the intake charge constantly, causing rough idle and misfires. More common on high-mileage vehicles. Fix cost: –.
How Norm’s Diagnoses and Fixes P0300

Our P0300 diagnostic process starts with reading freeze frame data — what was happening when the misfire was detected (RPM, load, coolant temperature). We then perform a systematic test sequence: spark plug inspection, coil resistance testing, fuel pressure testing under load, intake vacuum test, and if needed, a cylinder compression test. We identify the root cause before recommending any repair — and give you a written estimate before we start.
