Oklahoma sits at the center of Tornado Alley. The spring storm season from March through June — and a secondary season in November — brings tornado watches, severe hail, flooding, and straight-line wind damage that can total vehicles or cause thousands in hail damage. Preparing your vehicle and knowing what to do during severe weather is part of living in northeastern Oklahoma.
At Norm’s Auto Clinic, we’ve helped many customers deal with storm-damaged vehicles. Here’s what you need to know.

Before Tornado Season: Preparation Steps
Review your insurance coverage and your accident plan before storm season. Comprehensive coverage (separate from collision) covers hail damage, flooding, and tornado damage. If you only carry liability coverage, storm damage comes entirely out of pocket. Comprehensive coverage on a paid-off vehicle costs – per year — less than a single hail damage repair.
Garage space is the best protection. If you have a garage, use it during storm season. Keep it clear enough to actually get your vehicle inside when a storm warning activates — the 30 minutes of organizing could save ,000–,000 in hail damage.
Know where the covered parking is near your regular destinations — employers, stores, and covered parking structures. Having this list ready means faster decisions when the severe weather alert sounds.

During a Tornado Warning: What to Do with Your Vehicle
If you’re on the road during a tornado warning, do not try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle. Tornadoes move unpredictably and faster than they appear. Find a sturdy building and shelter inside immediately. A low area away from trees (not under an overpass — this increases danger) is a last resort. A vehicle is not safe shelter from a tornado.
During severe hail: If caught in hail, pull under an overpass or covered structure if immediately available. If not, stop in a safe location, angle the vehicle so hail hits the windshield at an angle rather than directly, and stay inside. Windshields are the strongest glass on the vehicle; side windows are weaker.

After Storm Damage: Assessment and Repair
After any storm damage, document everything with photos before moving the vehicle. File an insurance claim promptly — most insurers require claims to be filed within a reasonable period. Hail damage repair ranges from paintless dent repair (–,500) to full panel replacement for severe impacts.
If your vehicle was flooded: do not attempt to start it. Water in the engine (hydrolock) destroys it instantly. Have it towed to our shop — we can assess the damage and determine what’s salvageable. Flood-damaged electrical systems can cause problems for months after the water recedes.
