Trucks are Oklahoma’s most popular vehicles, and they have specific oil change considerations that don’t apply to passenger cars. If you drive an F-150, Silverado, Tundra, Ram, or any other pickup in Coweta, Broken Arrow, or the Tulsa area, here’s what you need to know about keeping the engine properly lubricated — especially if you tow or haul regularly.

Why Truck Oil Changes Are Different

- Higher oil capacity — Most trucks require 6–8 quarts of oil vs 4–5 quarts for passenger cars. More oil means slightly longer-lasting oil per mileage unit, but also more expensive changes.
- Towing and hauling — The primary severe service condition for most truck engines; puts significantly higher thermal and mechanical stress on oil.
- Turbocharged engines — Modern F-150 EcoBoost, Ram eTorque, and other turbocharged truck engines require full synthetic and more frequent changes under towing conditions.
- Diesel engines — Duramax, Cummins, and Power Stroke diesels have their own specific oil requirements (see below).

Oil Recommendations by Popular Oklahoma Truck
- Ford F-150 (5.0 V8, 3.5 EcoBoost, 2.7 EcoBoost): 5W-30 full synthetic; Ford specs Motorcraft or WSS-M2C946-B1 approved oils; EcoBoost: change every 7,500 miles or per Intelligent Oil Life Monitor
- Chevy/GMC Silverado/Sierra (5.3 V8, 6.2 V8): 0W-20 full synthetic (dexos1 Gen 2); 7,500 miles normal / 3,750–5,000 miles towing
- Ram 1500 (5.7 HEMI): 0W-20 full synthetic; 8,000 miles or OIL CHANGE indicator
- Toyota Tundra (5.7 V8, 3.5 Twin-Turbo): 0W-20 full synthetic; 10,000 miles or 12 months
- Nissan Frontier/Titan (3.8 V6, 5.6 V8): 0W-20 full synthetic; 5,000 miles conventional or 7,500–10,000 miles synthetic
Diesel Truck Oil Changes

Diesel truck oil changes require specific diesel-rated oils (CK-4 spec) in the correct viscosity (typically 15W-40 or 5W-40) and more frequent changes under towing conditions. Diesel engines accumulate more soot in the oil from combustion, which is why diesel oil change intervals are shorter than gasoline engine intervals despite using a larger volume of oil.
