Acura’s MDX and RDX are Honda’s luxury SUV lineup — built on proven Honda platforms with premium materials, advanced technology, and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). Oklahoma buyers who choose an Acura get genuine long-term reliability when they maintain it properly. The MDX in particular is one of the longest-lived three-row luxury SUVs available, with many owners reaching 200,000+ miles.
Norm’s Auto Clinic services Acura vehicles using Honda-compatible diagnostic tools and Acura/Honda-specification fluids. Here’s the maintenance guide for MDX and RDX owners in northeastern Oklahoma.

MDX 3.5L V6: Timing Belt and SH-AWD Service
The third-generation MDX (2014–2020) uses a 3.5L V6 with a timing belt that must be replaced at 105,000 miles. This is a non-negotiable service — a snapped timing belt destroys the engine instantly and costs ,000–,000 to rebuild. At our shop, timing belt service on an MDX runs – and includes the water pump, tensioners, and drive belt while everything is already disassembled.
The fourth-generation MDX (2022+) uses a 3.5L V6 with a timing chain — no scheduled replacement needed, but regular oil changes prevent the chain wear that causes startup rattle. SH-AWD drivetrain fluid service (rear differential and torque vectoring unit) should be performed every 30,000–40,000 miles on both generations. This is the most frequently deferred service we see on MDX owners, and it’s directly linked to SH-AWD coupling failures at high mileage.
The MDX’s 10-speed automatic transmission (2022+) benefits from fluid changes every 40,000–50,000 miles. The 9-speed DCT (2016–2021 Sport Hybrid) uses Honda-specific DCT fluid that should be changed every 40,000 miles — never use generic ATF in this application.

RDX Turbo Maintenance: 2.0T Engine Care
The third-generation RDX (2019+) uses a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine — a significant improvement in performance over the previous V6. Turbocharged engine maintenance is straightforward but demanding: oil changes every 5,000 miles with 0W-20 full synthetic meeting Honda’s HTO-06 specification, and a thorough diagnosis at the first sign of any check engine light.
The 2.0T’s direct injection design accumulates carbon deposits on intake valves over time — the same issue affecting all modern direct-injection turbocharged engines. An intake cleaning at 80,000–100,000 miles restores performance. Using top-tier gasoline with detergent additives reduces but doesn’t eliminate this issue.
