The Chevrolet Colorado is one of the most popular midsize trucks in Oklahoma — smaller than a Silverado but still capable of towing and hauling what most drivers need. The Colorado and its twin, the GMC Canyon, share the same mechanical platform and face the same service requirements. At Norm’s Auto Clinic in Coweta, we service Colorados for daily commuters, weekend adventurers, and light contractors alike.

Chevy Colorado Engine Options

- 2.5L 4-cylinder: The base engine. 5W-30 conventional or synthetic; oil every 7,500 miles. Reliable and straightforward. Main issues at high mileage are oil consumption and timing chain stretch from neglected oil changes.
- 3.6L V6: The most popular Colorado engine. 0W-20 full synthetic. Oil every 7,500 miles. Uses GM’s timing chain system — keep oil fresh to prevent stretch. A known issue is timing chain wear at 100,000+ miles with irregular oil changes.
- 2.8L Duramax diesel (2016–2020): The Colorado offered a diesel option — a compact turbodiesel with excellent torque and fuel economy. Diesel-spec oil every 7,500 miles; fuel filter every 15,000 miles. Relatively reliable if maintained correctly.
Chevy Colorado Common Problems
- Timing chain issues (3.6L V6): The 3.6L uses a complex dual-overhead-cam timing chain setup. With neglected oil changes, the chains stretch and the variable valve timing actuators wear out, causing rough running, poor fuel economy, and cam timing codes (P0008, P0017, P0019). Prevention: 0W-20 synthetic, change every 6,000-7,000 miles.
- 8-speed transmission shudder (2016–2022): The Colorado’s 8L45 automatic transmission shudders at light throttle — same torque converter clutch issue as the Silverado. Dexron HP fluid change is the first step.
- AC condensate drain clog: Oklahoma’s humidity causes the evaporator drain to clog, resulting in water dripping onto the passenger floorboard. An annual drain tube cleaning during AC service prevents this.
- Tailgate handle breakage: The Colorado tailgate handle is fragile — a common complaint is the handle cracking or breaking at the lever point. Replacement runs –.

Colorado Maintenance Schedule
- Every 7,500 miles: Oil and filter change; tire rotation
- Every 20,000–30,000 miles: Air filter; cabin filter; brake inspection; transfer case fluid (4WD); differential fluid
- Every 45,000–60,000 miles: Transmission fluid; spark plugs (gas V6); coolant inspection
- Every 100,000 miles: Coolant flush; timing chain inspection (3.6L); full suspension inspection
