The Chevrolet Equinox and Malibu represent GM’s bread-and-butter lineup — practical, affordable, and popular throughout northeastern Oklahoma. They’re reliable transportation when maintained properly, but both models have known issues that become expensive if ignored.
Norm’s Auto Clinic services both models regularly. Here’s the honest rundown on what goes wrong and when.

Equinox 1.5T Engine: Oil Consumption and Timing Chain
The 2018+ Chevy Equinox with the 1.5T turbocharged engine has documented oil consumption issues. GM issued extended warranty coverage for some affected vehicles, with oil consumption tests required before coverage kicks in. Check your oil level every 1,500–2,000 miles until you establish your Equinox’s pattern. Consumption over a quart per 3,000 miles warrants documentation and a dealer warranty claim.
The 1.5T timing chain can develop rattle on startup at high mileage when oil changes are stretched. Oil changes every 5,000 miles with full synthetic 0W-20 are the best prevention. Once timing chain rattle starts, the chain tensioner and guides require replacement — a repair that costs –,500 but is far less than a seized engine.
The 2.0T Equinox and Terrain are more powerful but use more expensive components. Turbocharged engine oil changes are non-negotiable at every 5,000 miles — the turbocharger’s oil-cooled bearings degrade quickly with overextended oil change intervals.

Malibu: CVT Service, Alternator, and Electrical Issues
The Chevrolet Malibu’s 1.5T engine shares the oil consumption and timing chain concerns of the Equinox. Additionally, the Malibu’s CVT (on some configurations) requires fluid changes every 45,000 miles — GM markets it as maintenance-free, but we see premature CVT failures at 80,000–100,000 miles on vehicles that never had the fluid changed.
Electrical issues are more common in the Malibu than most owners expect: failing stop-start batteries, alternator failure at 80,000–120,000 miles, and various module failures that illuminate warning lights. The stop-start system uses an AGM battery — when it fails, replace it with another AGM, not a conventional battery, or the stop-start system will drain it within weeks.
