Subaru Head Gaskets — The One Thing Every Owner Must Know
Subaru’s EJ-series boxer engines (used from the 1990s through roughly 2012 in the Outback, Forester, Impreza, and Legacy) have a documented head gasket weakness. This isn’t a universal failure, but it’s common enough that any EJ-powered Subaru with over 100,000 miles deserves a careful cooling system inspection.
There are two types of Subaru head gasket failure: external (oil or coolant leaking externally along the engine block) and internal (coolant or combustion gases entering the coolant system). External leaks are more easily detected; internal failures are more serious and can cause overheating and coolant loss without an obvious puddle under the car.
If your Subaru is losing coolant without a visible leak, running slightly warm, or if you notice white smoke from the exhaust (particularly on cold starts), have it inspected promptly. Early detection and repair prevents a manageable head gasket job from becoming an engine replacement.
Subaru Timing Belt — Don’t Miss This Service
EJ-series Subaru engines are interference engines with a rubber timing belt. If the belt breaks — which happens without warning when it’s past its service life — the engine is typically destroyed. Subaru recommends replacement every 105,000 miles, and we agree that interval is the maximum. In Oklahoma’s heat, 90,000–100,000 miles is a more conservative target for belt replacement, particularly for vehicles driven in stop-and-go conditions.
Timing belt service typically includes the belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, water pump, and thermostat — all replaced together because the labor cost to access these components is the same whether you replace one part or all of them. Doing the complete job at once saves money in the long run.
