When to Replace Wiper Blades
Replace wiper blades any time they smear, streak, or leave unwiped bands across your field of view. Also replace them if they chatter (skip across the glass rapidly), make a squealing sound, or if the rubber shows cracking or hardening. In Oklahoma, blades typically last 6–12 months — UV exposure and heat cycles degrade the rubber faster than in northern climates.
Change blades proactively in spring before tornado season, regardless of apparent condition. If you can’t clearly see through rain at highway speed with wipers on high, your blades need replacement — this is not a gradual process, and poor visibility in severe weather is genuinely dangerous.
Don’t forget the rear wiper on SUVs and hatchbacks. Rear wiper blades are replaced less frequently but need the same attention.
Wiper Blade Types: What Works Best for Oklahoma

Beam (bracketless) wiper blades (– each) use a single curved piece of rubber that applies even pressure across the entire blade. They perform better in freezing rain because there are no frame joints to pack with ice, and they provide more even pressure on curved windshields. Winter-specific blades (–) have a rubber boot covering the frame that prevents ice packing. If you drive during ice events, these provide noticeably better performance than conventional blades.
